C3 Energy making a play for smart grid analytics                 Posted by Adam Lesser, Friday, February 8, 2013

With a $100 million in R&D, energy data company C3 is serious about building a business model around analyzing data for utilities. So far C3 has run a smart grid data analytics project for PG&E that involved a lot of commercial and industrial building data. C3 was founded by Tom Siebel, which built the dominant [...]                    Read more »

What Toshiba got in the Consert acquisition

            Adam Lesser

Toshiba continues to make acquisitions in the smart grid space, having bought Landis+Gyr, which in turn purchased meter data management vendor Ecologic Analytics over a year ago. Well, it’s done it again, this time picking up Consert, a startup that was trialing home energy management technology that would network the pool pump, HVAC and water heater in a set up that could do two way communication with a utility.
I still believe this is a difficult space to be in because all home energy management providers either have to sell to utilities, which is a long road, or find channel partners like broadband provider Comcast to sell their service as part of a larger home automation setup. Not to mention they’re now competing against companies like Nest which are grabbing consumers’s attention with sleek design and a narrow but focused solution geared at the HVAC unit, which accounts for 50 percent of electricity use.
But clearly Toshiba wants a full suite of options to market to utilities worldwide, which could now include the meter, the software to manage that volume of meter data and a home energy management system that could help manage and shift load on the grid and meet energy efficiency metrics. Utilities tend to like dealing with one vendor and if Toshiba can offer all these options in one package, they’ll be competitive.

Apple to double fuel cell bet in North Carolina                 Posted by Adam Lesser, Wednesday, December 5, 2012
In a filing with the North Carolina Utility Commission, Apple reveals that it will double its fuel cell installation to 10 megawatts, making it now the largest data center fuel cell installation in the world (eBay had previously held the largest installation for its Utah data center). Interestingly, Apple doesn’t need all that power and [...]                    Read more »

The Buzz: Facebook “like” button crashed the internet?

News:

Dave:   Moving to cloud computing is harder, costlier than originally envisioned

Network World - A substantial number of businesses say cloud computing security challenges are daunting and the costs higher than they originally thought they would be, according to the Cloud Survey report published today by consultancy KPMG International.

The study indicates that one-half of the 650 respondents said their organizations already make use of the cloud for business processes. Two of the main reasons given for moving to cloud-based services were to make it easier to enter new markets and drives process transformation. But one-third said the cost of moving to the cloud were higher than expected, mainly because they belatedly discovered that it involved more changes in their existing business and IT architectures than they'd originally recognized.

Chris: Sourcing Mgrs Must Understand Cloud’s Connection With Other Technologies

Decision-makers in charge of finding, assessing and engaging with suppliers will need to change their tactics in 2013 and beyond due to the emergence of several innovative technologies. Sourcing managers need to consider how big data, social tools, mobile devices and cloud computing present new risks and opportunities in the procurement of resources, according to a report by Gartner.”

Let’s talk procurement strategy and portfolio management.

Topics:
Cloud sprawl & bundled layers
Cloud silos & lock-in
Vendor selection / scoring
Architecture

JP:Common Rackspace Private Cloud reference architectures
http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/private/architecture/
Three reference architectures:
               Mass Compute
               Mass Compute w/ External storage
               Distributed Object Storage

These reference architectures are pitched as enterprise ready cloud computing, but to me, they harken back to the days of Osborne computers or the kits that were sold in the back of Popular Science magazines.
In his blog, Paul Rad, Vice President of Private Cloud, uses  the terms, “Easily Deploy, Run An Enterprise Private Cloud”. I don’t think anything about building, deploying or running an enterprise private cloud should be described as “easy”.

Chris: Scrap your code, start from scratch in the cloud

Mani Doraisamy posted an article on this and I thought a few of their points are worth discussng.  First is the Clayton Christiansen reference to the solar adoption model by third world countries.  Industrialized countries don’t want solar as it’s more expensive, but countries where they don’t have power and need to distribute it in an agile fashion are buying up solar panels like hotcakes.  Is the same true for cloud computing when you look at the maturity of companies out there?  Major non-cloud-aware software vendors still have their foundations in large organizations that could afford the major implementation dollars to get them in there.  Today’s “try and buy” consumerized model doesn’t really fit well with many of them, and startups to mid size companies that haven’t yet invested a hundred millions dollars plus into a legacy app are going this route.  He’s pointing out the desire to just buy SaaS rather than continuing to fuel the fiefdom of legacy ERP type applications.

JP:

http://www.computerweekly.com/blogs/cwdn/2013/01/what-is-cloud-management-software-anyway.html

What is cloud management software anyway?

Craig Sullivan: Cloud Management software is put in place to try and juggle hybrid cloud deployments. It's never going to be more than a stop-gap solution as businesses struggle to integrate between two separate cloud environments, failing to fully realise the benefits of a true cloud. More often than not the private cloud is a myth, nothing more than the traditional client/server architecture dressed up to look new and innovative. The 'famous' (and well-proven at this point) cost savings and improved efficiencies that cloud offers are really only available from a true public cloud.

News/topics:

-OpenStack in 2013
OpenStack backers say 2013 is the year for OpenStack adoption. Is that a reasonable expectation?
Story: http://www.networkworld.com/news/2013/010213-outlook-openstack-265216.html
The open source cloud computing platform already has an impressive cadre of participants, from Rackspace, Dell, HP, Cisco, IBM and even VMware. But while the vendors seemed to have huddled around OpenStack there’s a question as to whether users have flocked to use the platform with the same intensity. Backers of the project hope 2013 is the year for OpenStack adoption, especially with companies like Red Hat releasing their own distribution of the code.
What are the chances for OpenStack adoption in 2013 and what does this rpoject need to do before mainstream cloud users need to start paying attention to it?

As a side note, a Dell VP also announced last week that the company’ may wait until the end of this year to launch its OpenStack powered public cloud. What does that say about Dell’s strategy and the OpenStack code?

-Netflix releases Janitor Monkey to help tidy up the cloud
Story: http://www.networkworld.com/news/2013/010413-janitor-monkey-netflix-265504.html?hpg1=bn
There is a growing market of cloud management tools, including from providers like Newvem, Cloudability, Cloud Cruiser and Cloudyn. Each of these companies help customers track and optimize their public cloud usage. Now, Netflix has released an open source version of their own tool, named Janitor Monkey. It’s in Netflix’s Simian Army family, which is headlined by Chaos Monkey, another tool Netflix open sourced that tests for fault tolerance in Amazon’s cloud.
Who should use these tools, what are they best for and what does Netflix’s open source alternative mean for businesses that make a living off these services?
